Create a grounded, cozy seating area that brings furniture together.

  • All Legs On: For large rooms, choose 8'x10'. All furniture sits completely on the rug.
  • Front Legs Only: Most popular for apartments. Use a 6'x9' or 5'x8'. Only the front legs of the sofa rest on the rug.
  • Coffee Table Only: For compact spaces, a 5'x8' or 4'x6' centered under the coffee table works well.

Comfort underfoot when getting out of bed is key.

  • Queen / King Bed: An 8'x10' provides generous coverage on both sides.
  • Full / Queen Bed: A 6'x9' works well placed perpendicular to the bed.
  • Twin Bed: A 4'x6' or 5'x8' is suitable, provided it is laid out sideways across the foot of the bed..
  • Placement Rule: Start the rug about 1/3 down from the pillows, stopping just before your nightstands.

Ensure functionality so chairs don't catch on the rug edges.

  • The 24-Inch Rule: The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides.
  • Chair Safety: This ensures chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out.
  • Rectangular Tables: An 8'x10' is usually the safest choice for 6-8 seats.

Measuring Tips

Before You Shop
  • Measure your room and furniture first
  • Use painter's tape to outline rug size on floor
  • Consider door clearances (for rug height)
Common Mistakes
  • Choosing a rug that's too small ("Floating Rug")
  • Placing rug too close to walls (leave 18" gap)
  • Not accounting for chair movement
